CDE is an independent policy research and advocacy organisation focusing on critical national development issues and their relationship to economic growth and democratic consolidation. Through examining South African realities, and looking at international experience where appropriate, CDE formulates practical policy proposal outlining ways in which South Africa can tackle major social and economic challenges.
Established in 1995 with core funding from South African businesses, it was to be expected that CDE would initially be viewed with some caution by a new government coming from a very different background. However, CDE has rapidly gained recognition as an authoritative voice in economic and social development policy, and is now heard at the highest levels of government.
